Sutherlandia

Posted by Health Africa on February 10, 2008.

This remarkable plant native to South Africa is described as the African Ginseng because of its wide ranging ability to help the body adapt to stress.

Known in afrikaans as ‘Die Kankerbos’, the ‘Cancer Bush’ it supports the immune system and has recently received considerable publicity for its beneficial effects in conditions ranging from chronic fatigue to HIV. It was also used to combat the symptoms of ‘flu during the 1918 influenza pandemic and is still used to treat ‘flu to this day.

In Sotho it is known as motlepelo means ‘bringing back the heart’ referring to its traditional use for emotional shock and stress. The ancient Zulu name insiswa means ‘the one which dispels darkness’ alluding to its anti-depressant effect, and agitated Zulu warriors returning from battle would be given an infusion of Sutherlandia ‘to take the war out’ – i.e. as a calming tea.
